It took two weeks for the judge to call her back. She thought that waiting for her due date with Garret was excruciating but waiting for the judge to call was worse. She answered her phone, and the judge didn’t give her time to exchange pleasantries.

“Resign,” she almost shouted into the other end of the phone.

“I’m sorry,” Firefly said, pretending not to understand her. “Did you just tell me to resign from the firm that I work for?”

“Yes, I did,” the judge confirmed. “I did some digging around and I’m almost positive that your boss is being paid by the Manzoni family, Penny,” she said. “You’ll never win the fight if that’s the case. If you quit, the firm will be forced to find a replacement for you and I’m betting that your boss will be put up for the task. If he already works for the Manzoni family, they won’t take any more chances with a novice lawyer trying to cut their teeth on their first big case. They will demand one of the firm’s top lawyers. That’s when you anonymously turn over the flash drive that you have with your evidence, to the opposing team of lawyers. How did you come to have that in your possession?” Judge Josephs asked.

“I’m not sure that I should answer that question, Judge,” she admitted. “Let’s just say that it might not hold up in court.”

“Well, that won’t be your problem anymore, not once you turn it over,” the judge said. “You don’t seem very surprised that your boss is involved with this mob family, Penny.”

“I’m not,” she admitted. “I called to talk to Bill shortly after we spoke. I told him that I couldn’t get back in time to handle the case and that I was taking some personal time with my son. That’s when he informed me that wasn’t an option. He said that if I didn’t return in time for court, I’d be found in contempt and he’d make sure that a warrant would be issued for my arrest.”

“Well, that’s not very nice now, is it?” the judge asked.

“No,” Firefly agreed, “it’s not. I asked him why he was being so nasty, and he told me that he wouldn’t risk his own neck to save me or my kid. He said that the Manzoni family would find me and make good on their threats, and when I challenged him and asked him why, he said that he would see to it personally that they find out where I’m staying.”

“Please tell me that was an empty threat and that he’s not one of the people you trusted with your secret,” the judge said.

“He doesn’t know where I am,” she assured.

“Good,” Judge Josephs said, “how did you leave it with him?”

“Well, I didn’t leave anything with Bill. You see, my overly protective security detail was listening in since I had the call on speaker, and Razor informed my boss that he wouldn’t let him or anyone else get near me.”
